Having my second baby was hard. I had him in 2016, 2 years after undertaking open heart surgery, and I worked right up until the day before he was born (he came early – I did mean to have a break). I love every inch of him, and never regret my decision, but it has been hard on my all round health, and particularly my body.
Did you know when you are pregnant, you don’t shed hair like normal? The problem is you loose all the hair you should have throughout the 9 months pretty rapidly after the baby is born. I breastfed for a year after my Son was born, and I found as soon as I stopped, then my hair was literally falling out in clumps. It has never really recovered, and although I try not to worry too much about my appearance, the condition of my hair has been getting me down.
So I decided in the New Year, that I would try to improve my hair, by adding some things into my diet and making a treatment I could use at night. After doing some research I devised the following Treatment Oil, based on what I could source as some real evidence that they would improve the condition/rate of growth of my hair.
- Jojoba Oil (100ml) – to be used as a base. This moisturises the hair follicle, lending strength, and making the hair less likely to break. Some studies have also shown it can aid the follicle to grow, and regular use can increase hair thickness.
- Rosemary 10 drops – this is used to stimulate the follicles and to encourage blood circulation to the scalp. There is some research to support this, a 2013 study of mice, did show Rosemary Oil could aid to regrow hair that had previously been lost – the theory was that the oil may prevent DHT (a type of testosterone, typical in hair loss) from binding with the hormone receptors to attack the follicles. A 2015 study compared Rosemary with minoxidil – a hair growth treatment, and after 6 months both groups saw significant hair growth. So Rosemary is good for long term hair growth.
- Peppermint Oil 10 Drops – another one for stimulating the scalp and blood flow, another study on mice (there have to be some very silken haired mice out there somewhere!) found that Peppermint Oil actually increased the number of follicles, follicle depth and overall hair growth.
- Lavender Oil 10 Drops – Lavender is renowned for antimicrobial, anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Lavender will improve the overall health of the scalp, and will act as a deep conditioner for the hair, improving appearance by adding shine.
To use the oil, I massage it into my scalp when I get into bed and let the oils do their work. I have been using this treatment oil on my hair, every other night, for the last 6 weeks, and I have to say, although my hair isn’t suddenly amazing, it has grown quicker in this time, with easily an inch growth in 4-6 weeks, when I would usually see about half an inch – I know this because I dye my hair and can tell by the roots. This could also be helped by the general massaging of the scalp. I also do believe my hair may feel a little thicker and look a bit shinier, so all in all I am hoping to continue to see some good results from this little homemade treatment oil. Anything that can make me feel a little less ‘blah’ when I look in the mirror can only be a good thing!
